GETTY IMAGES IS HERE!

Folks, we have a new STOCK IMAGE service. Much like Corbis, Getty Images offers access to low, medium, and high resolution digital images for Art Institute of Seattle students to use for educational purposes - class projects, portfolio, etc. Users will have access to over 500,000 images and can download up to 50 high-resolution images per quarter. To start an account you must have a valid ID and come to the library to sign off on a user agreement form. The Corbis service will end at the end of December, at which time all Corbis images not already in use must be deleted.

Book of the Week

Nudibranch Behavior
by David W. Behrens
Nudibranch Behavior is a small book packed with photogrpahs and information about some of the most beautiful reef creatures – nudibranchs – also known as sea slugs. I picked up Nudibranch Behavior for the photos, then, as so often happens, became absorbed in the text. It’s introductory material for the entry-level sea-slug enthusiast, and will be interesting to photographers, nature lovers, snorkelers and divers. For the holidays this year, I’m buying a copy of this book for each person in my family - I recommend it! Found in the New Books area at the front of library through November; the call number is QL430.4 .B428 2005.

Some Pop Culture

Today I was looking at boingboing and found a few things I thought you art students might be interested in. By the way, if you don't read boingboing, I highly recommend it - it is a self-described "directory of wonderful things." It's updated daily, and is my main source of "news."

Here is a link to a post about Grim Natwick, the animator whose work includes Woody Woodpecker, Snow White, Betty Boop, Mr. Magoo, and Mickey Mouse. In this article are links to a super-cool online exhibit, that you should check out if you're into this kind of thing.

Next we have Mango Falls, a website that includes a lot of photos posted by a "guy who, over many years, collected rolls of undeveloped film from cameras found in antique stores. He finally had them developed and ended up with several hundred images that he's placed online." I found this one on boingboing as well.

Finally, I heard this fantastic song on KEXP while driving to work the other day. It's called "Young Folks" and it's by Peter, Bjorn and John. I found the video on youtube, and it is a lovely little piece of animation that will make you happy if you watch it.

Well, that's fair

New Books -- Woohoo!

All the books that we received and cataloged in October can now be found in the "New Books" area at the front of our library. Also, a list of all the October acquisitions can be found at the bottom of the AiS Library homepage.

You’ll notice that there are a lot of ebooks on the list – that’s because we’re cataloging every one of the 3,000+ ebooks that are available through Safari Books Online, AiS’s online source for technical and software manuals.

Safari is a service that we subscribe to so that our faculty and students have access to a variety of manuals for the most recent software releases. The ebooks are identical to the print versions of the same titles. We’re keeping fewer of these books on our shelves, and Safari is keeping more of them in their online repository.

It will be a while before all the Safari titles show up in our catalog, Athena – in the meantime, our patrons still have access to the complete Safari collection.

To access Safari’s collection:
1. Go to the library’s website: ais.aiiresources.com
2. Click on Databases & Other Resources from the top menu.
3. Scroll down to SAFARI Tech Books on the left.

This database is available off-campus for current students, faculty and staff. If you are one of these, and you would like off-campus Safari access, send me an email from your Ai student or faculty email address, include your program name, and I’ll send the User ID and Password.
