Graphic Novels Section

We've created a new section in the library especially for Graphic Novels. You can find a lot of great comics there and we've got more arriving soon. Here are a couple my favorites from the recent arrivals.

Age of Bronze

Y: The Last Man

If you like Y: The Last Man, you may also want to look at the latest issue of the Comics Journal. It features a long interview with Y: The Last Man writer Brian K. Vaughan.

AiS Library Literacy Scholarship - Deadline February 27

Don't forget to apply for the AiS Library Literacy Scholarship. You could receive a $350 award for what is a relatively painless application process. Here is more information on the selection process:

1. All recipients must plan to pursue an associate’s or bachelor’s degree program at one of The Art Institutes. Applicants must be planning to attend school in Winter/Spring 2009.
2. The recipients will be chosen by an AiS Library Scholarship Committee and then selections are forwarded to the EDMC Education Foundation Scholarship Committee.

Recipients will be chosen from applications submitted by eligible students based on the following criteria:
a. Financial need – defined as direct cost of attendance minus financial aid the student is eligible for.
b. Acceptable Academic performance/potential
c. 750 word essay on a book the applicant would most like to see made into a movie.

Financial need is the most important criteria. However, all aspects of a student’s application will be reviewed.
You can pick up an application in the library or print one out here.

Top Chef Tryouts (and a Top Chef Gripe)

The reality tv show Top Chef is holding a Seattle casting call for its sixth season. You can try out for the show on Wednesday, February 11, between 10:00 AM – 2:00 PM at Canlis Restaurant. More information on the casting call can be found here:

I love reality show competitions like Project Runway and Top Chef because, unlike most reality shows, the contestants must have talent, skill and creativity. I'm enjoying season five of Top Chef, but repugnant judge Toby Young is nearly ruining it for me. Young was chosen as a mid-season replacement for Gail Simmons, presumably because of his willingness to be ruthless (and perhaps because he looks like a Tom Colicchio Mini-Me?). The problem with Young is that his critiques usually seem to have nothing to do with the actual food in front of him. He has clearly prepared his zingers long in advance, yet he still delivers them as a clumsy, rambling mess. Young seems desperate to come off as clever, but his witticisms fail to rise above the level of internet troll. If only they would eliminate judges as well as contestants.
